James Brokenshire is the Member of Parliament for Old Bexley and Sidcup and the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. In this role, James has responsibility for ensuring people throughout the country have access to affordable and high quality housing, growing local economies, building integrated communities and supporting effective local government.
James was diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2018 which required him to undergo surgery to remove the upper lobe of his right lung at Guy’s Hospital in London. Whilst the diagnosis resulted in James having to resign from his position as Northern Ireland Secretary, with thanks to the outstanding care of the NHS doctors, nurses and support staff and support from family James was able to make a recovery and returned to the Cabinet in April 2018.
Since then, James has campaigned for early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer and to raise awareness in reducing the stigma of lung cancer.
